regarding my first documentary short, my overall satisfaction is about 60%. if i didn’t rush to submit the film festival, the final work should be much richer than now(i think).
the story begins with an idea. beijing is not a small city, full of people. kfc and mcdonald’s had over 10,000 restaurants in china, you can see one every four or five kilometers. this kind of fast food restaurant not only feeds people food, but also the biggest chain public restroom in china. even a night shelter for homeless.
i originally plan to focus on the people homeless who sleep in fast food restaurants. after a few nights of investigation, i found out various people sleep in fast food restaurants. but there is a problem, that i only can make sure people are going to sleep after they lying on the tables, not before. but once they lie down, i feel embarrassed to bother them.
meeting liu is a coincidence. that day i was a bit drunk, stayed at a kfc for hours for nothing, shooting some homeless people sleeping on table. at that time, he walked in the door, checked sleeping people, without ordering food, he found a vacant table, lie prone on it. and then he started playing with his phone. might be alcohol influence, i went to talk to him. he was nervous at first, he may be thinking i came to eject him, after i introduced myself, he putted down his guard, and started talk to me.
that night, he just arrived beijing, after 9-hour train trip, he came to this particularly kfc directly. he seems to know beijing very well, he know this kfc is open 24-7 and available to sleep, the hospital nearby can charge his phones, he already knew all of this.he is a mystery person, used to work in a crew doing subtitles. before he came beijing, he had a part-time job in heze, shandong, and the boss had not paid him yet. before he got the money, he unwilling to look for a temporary job, he still wants to get in film industry. but every time i went to shot him, he was doing nothing but charging phones at hospital or stayed at park, then, he goes back to kfc.
he thinks himself is professional, could complete all the work in a film independently, even wrote some script of the classic novel white snake. his parent had him without married, his father doesn’t care about him, he grew up with his grandfather. he claims he doesn’t want a girlfriend, if he wants one, he will not care the girl has any money.
at then end of the film, he told me he got the salary, about RMB10,000 yuan, but he still sleeps in kfc, charges in hospital and sits in the park.
i don’t know if this is a good documentary. but the experience is different. following the protagonist, getting in his life.
